BUFFALO BILL STATE HISTORICAL PARK
North Platte was home of the man who made the Wild West world-renowned. No one figure personifies the frontier spirit better than William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody, the West’s most colorful showman, army scout and buffalo hunter. The legacy of the life and times of the man who personified the frontier spirit lives on at Buffalo Bill Ranch State Historical Park. Cody’s elegant Victorian house, built in 1886, and huge barn wit on 25 acres of what was originally a 4,000-acre spread that Cody called Scout’s Rest Ranch.
The barn, built in 1886, now features Wild West Show memorabilia, original posters, and a movie made of film clips taken at the time the show was touring throughout the United States and Europe.

The house, barn, and original outbuildings are now being preserved by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission as a state historical park.

20th CENTURY VETERAN'S MEMORIAL
The 20th Century Veterans’ Memorial is a permanent memorial dedicated to and honoring the military men and women of the United States who served their country during the 20th Century. The monument is located in North Platte’s Iron Horse Park, which is adjacent to the busy “crossroads” of the Interstate 80 and U.S. Highway 83 junction. The five major armed forces (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard) will be memorialized by larger than life-sized bronze statues sculpted by internationally known artist, Ted Long of North Platte.

The five major conflicts of the 20th Century are depicted in a 15 x 40-foot brick bas-relief mural.

The memorial features a “Walk of Honor” lined by thousands of commemorative bricks above ground showing the names of veterans who served at any time during the 20th Century. A “Place of Meditation” containing a pentagon shaped pedestal will pay special tribute to veterans from a 27-county Mid-Nebraska area who lost their lives during 20th Century conflicts. Their names will be displayed on bronze plaques along with their home counties and the conflict in which they gave their lives.

Conceived by veterans. Designed by veterans. This memorial is unique in the United States. It honors all Twentieth Century Veterans.

DANCING LEAF CULTURAL LEARNING CENTER
One thousand years ago in Southwest Nebraska, there lived small groups of Native Americans known to archaeologists as the Upper Republican Culture. These people who lived in earthen lodges and farmed along Medicine Creek were thought to be ancestors to the Pawnee. Some feel that their way of life was harsh, but their ability to live as one with nature gave them a spiritual outlook on life that few have ever experienced. Set in rolling prairie hills along the banks of Medicine Creek, a feeling of closeness to nature and inner strength that can best be experienced through this simple way of life has been captured.

Dancing Leaf Cultural Learning Center offers a unique blend of educational and recreational opportunities. An earthen lodge from the time period of 800-1300 has been reconstructed. A tour of this and other archaeological information and artifacts is covered in a 90-minute daily tour. FORT McPHERSON NATIONAL CEMETERY
…Fort McPherson is the only National Cemetery in Nebraska

Established on September 27, 1863, Fort McPherson provided protection for traders and trappers in their search for furs, settlers in their quest for land and freedom, miners seeking the riches of the Rocky Mountains, and the first transcontinental railroad linking the East and West Coast.

On March 3, 1873, the Fort McPherson National Cemetery was established on a 107-acre tract of the Fort McPherson Military Reservation. Fort McPherson is the only National Cemetery in Nebraska, and about 6,500 United States veterans and their spouses are buried here.

Over the years, this small piece of Nebraska has become the final resting place for four recipients of the Medal of Honor, two of which are Buffalo Soldiers. The Medal of Honor is earned by a deed of personal bravery and self-sacrifice, above and beyond the call of duty.
